Description
Living up to its name, the Blue My Mind Evolvulus, what some folks call Blue Daze or Dwarf Morning Gory, produces some of the truest blue flowers we’ve ever laid eyes on. It is also one of the most heat tolerant plants, thriving as far south as Key West. It has larger flowers than other evolvus that appear in abundance continually from spring to frost, which the butterflies and beneficial pollinators will also appreciate. The hotter and sunnier it is the more it blooms. That said, it’s not tolerant of frost, so gardeners north of Zone 9 should grow it as an annual in garden beds or containers that can be overwintered in a sun room or other well-lit interior space. A mounding and trailing plant that might reach 8 inches tall and 2 feet wide, it is perfect for use in pots, window boxes, hanging baskets and other containers, or in groupings or as a border in garden beds. Blue My Mind is drought tolerant when established, but blooms haevier with a damp to moist soil, just not too much water. No deadheading or pruning required, just plant and watch it grow and bloom.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 inches tall and spreading to form a patch 18 inches or more wide, Blue My Mind Evolvulus is ideal for growing in flower garden beds and pots, planters, window boxes, hanging baskets and other containers. It works especially nice as a border along a path or walkway. A fine addition to seasonal color beds, blue theme gardens and butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens. Cold hardy in USDA Zones 9a-11. In cold climates where frost or freezing temperattures occur it will be an annual. That said, plants growing in containers can be overwintered in a warm, well-lit, interior space.
Growing Preferences
Blue My Mind Evolvus is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. It is drought tolerant when established. The more sun and heat the plant receives the more flowers. Use a potting mix and/or a 50/50 combination of potting mix and sandy potting soil for growing in containers. No deadheading necessary.
